4.8 Earthquake at 11:45am 06/26/05 local time
I wanted to share this locals account of being in the back country during this 4.8 magnitude Quake. We had just stopped on our mountain bikes to take a brake on a ridge top. We had been resting for about 5 minutes when all of a sudden the ground started shaking. I could see the three foot around 60 foot tall tree i was facing start shaking and swaying and the ground started moving too. I would say it was about two or three inches of lateral movement and an inch or two of vertical movment at the base of the tree and then some of us started saying, "what the hell is that?" but then soon realizing what was happening. The large tree in front of me swaying back and forth and the ground lifting, that was an amazing sight. Not to mention the roar coming up from the ground as the quake passed by us. It had appeared that across the canyon that a few rocks were falling too as the quake continued....It only lasted a few seconds but that was enough to get us excited.
We had a GPS going at the time and i made a small map showing our location (The Triangular Shape on the block) during the quake and the quakes epicenter (the Cross haired block). As you will see, we were only a little over a mile from the epicenter. As far as i know there is no damage to the local community... Thats good! :) We are now reciving alot of after shocks too, maybe the Big one is next?.
